Belgrade Safe City facial surveillance

July 2021

The Serbian government is installing over 1,200 Huawei real-time facial recognition CCTV cameras across Belgrade in an expansion of the Chinese company's Safe City security system. The cameras also have license plate recognition capability.

The move has led to accusations of covert surveillance and opacity by human rights and privacy activists, EU members of parliament, and the general public.

According to Privacy International, Serbia's Ministry of Interior insists that all information about the system is 'confidential', and has been blocking freedom of information requests for information on the location and workings of the cameras.

Serbia is attempting to join the European Union.
