Facebook credit card age ad targeting

April 2021

The Markup reports that four credit card and financial loan companies - namely Aspiration, Chime, Hometap, and Varo - have been exclude certain age groups from their advertising campaigns on Facebook, thereby violating Facebook's anti-discrimination policies, and in some cases potentially transgressing US federal or state civil rights laws.

The findings prompted US senator Mazie Hirono to accuse Facebook vice president Monica Bickert of making a claim that 'appears to be false' about not allowing the use of sensitive targeting criteria when placing financial services and housing ads when appearing before a Senate Judiciary hearing on social media in April 2021.
