Israel's defence force is using a smartphone-based facial recognition system in Hebron, part of the occupied West Bank.

According to the Washington Post, the 'Blue Wolf' system is being used to take photographs of Palestinians’ faces and match them to a database.

The system enables Israeli soldiers to identify and detain Palestinians before they have presented their ID cards.

The report mentions the system may form part of Hebron Smart City, a broader CCTV-based network that is said to track  Palestinians in their homes.

Hebron Smart City includes White Wolf, an app used by security officials in West Bank settlements to identify Palestinians before they enter settlements to work.
