WhatsApp data sharing transparency

September 2021

WhatsApp has been fined EUR 225 million by Ireland's data privacy regulator for not informing users how it shared their data with Facebook. The fine is one of the largest under the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The two-year investigation also led the regulator to order WhatsApp Ireland to take action to bring its data sharing with Facebook in line with GDPR.

Facebook (now Meta) is WhatsApp's owner and sister company.
