An AI-powered spoof robocall falsely depicted President Joe Biden discouraging participation in the USโ€™ New Hampshire primary and urging voters โ€˜saveโ€™ their vote for the November 2024 US Presidential Election.

A multistate investigation later revealed that the robocall had been commissioned by Steve Kramer, a Texas-based political consultant working for rival candidate Dean Philips. Kramer claimed the robocall was an act of civil disobedience calling attention to the dangers of AI in politics.

Audio experts concluded the call was made using ElevenLabs. In response to the incident, ElevenLabs CEO Mati Staniszewski stated that the company was 'dedicated to preventing the misuse of audio AI tools,' and said it would launch an investigation into misuse of their voice replication software.

โž• March 2024. The League of Woman Voters sued Steve Kramer on behalf of three impacted US voters.

โž• May 2024. Steve Kramer was indicted and fined USD 6 million by the US Federal Communications Commission.ย
