The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is investigating weapons screening firm Evolv Technologies over claims it made about its AI systems accurately identifying weapons passing through its screeners.
Evolv's AI-powered technology is used in public spaces such as stadiums, hospitals, schools, and entertainment venues to strengthen security by eliminating gaps presented by traditional metal detectors.
The investigation comes amidst ongoing concerns that Evolv may have overstated its capabilities, potentially giving customers a false sense of security and safety. In March 2024, the company was forced to backtrack on claims its technology had been tested by the UK government.
In February 2024, the US Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) notified Evolv that it was conducting a confidential 'non-public, fact finding inquiry' into the company.
