Israel's used artificial intelligence tools to track and kill Hamas commander Ibrahim Biari in Gaza, a strike that resulted in significant civilian casualties and raised ethical concerns.
Israeli military intelligence, specifically Unit 8200, deployed a newly enhanced AI-powered audio analysis tool to intercept and analyse the phone calls of senior Hamas official Ibrahim Biari, pinpointing his location in a tunnel complex beneath the densely populated Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza.
The intelligence scoop led to an airstrike which killed Biari, who was said to be a key planner of the October 7 attacks on Israel. The strike also resulted in the deaths of dozens of others, with reports indicating civilian casualties ranging from 50 to over 125 people.
The incident is under military investigation due to the scale of collateral damage.
The same AI tool has since been further refined and used to help locate hostages in Gaza.
The operation was part of Israel’s intensified efforts to target Hamas leadership and recover hostages following the October 7 attacks.
After initial intelligence failed to locate Biari, Israeli engineers integrated artificial intelligence capabilities into an existing surveillance system, enabling rapid analysis of intercepted communications to identify high-value targets in complex urban environments.
The urgency following the attacks led to the immediate deployment of these advanced AI tools, which were developed in collaboration with reservists from major tech firms including Microsoft and Google.
The incident highlights the potential and the risks of integrating AI into modern warfare, raising questions about accountability, oversight, and the balance between military effectiveness and civilian protection.
More broadly, the use of AI in military targeting has sparked international scrutiny and debate, with concerns about the ethics, legality, reliability and potential for mistaken identification or excessive collateral damage in densely populated areas.
