What happened

A special supplement in the Chicago Sun-Times, titled "Summer Reading List for 2025," featured recommendations for summer reads that included numerous books attributed to well-known authors such as Isabel Allende, Andy Weir, and Min Jin Lee - none of which actually exist. 

The list was generated by artificial intelligence and published without disclosure, leading to public confusion and widespread online criticism. 

The incident is seen to have undermined reader trust in the publication, journalism as a whole, and the named authors, as the fabricated content appeared alongside legitimate recommendations and was not clearly distinguished from editorial material.

The error was traced to a freelance creator working through King Features, a syndicate providing content to newspapers, rather than the Sun-Times newsroom itself.

Why it happened

The incident occurred due to the use of generative AI by a freelance contributor who failed to fact-check the AI's output, resulting in the inclusion of plausible-sounding but entirely fictional book titles. 

The Sun-Times had recently undergone significant staff reductions, which may have contributed to a reliance on external and automated content sources. 

The supplement was licensed from King Features and not reviewed or approved by the Sun-Times editorial team, highlighting a lack of oversight in the publication process.
