An apartment host falsely claimed a guest had caused thousands of pounds’ worth of damage, using images she says had been digitally manipulated usiing AI to back up his allegations.
A London-based student renting a Manhattan Airbnb for two and a half months left early after feeling unsafe. The host then accused her of causing over USD 16,000 in various damages, supposedly supported by photos he submitted to Airbnb.
The photos, allegedly AI-generated or manipulated, showed damage that the guest denied and proved inconsistent upon inspection.
The London-based academic was refunded almost GBP 4,300. The false claim could have caused significant financial harm to the guest if not challenged.
The host appears to have tried to exploit AI image generation technology to fabricate evidence of damage, possibly motivated by retaliation after the guest ended the stay early.
Airbnb initially accepted the host’s claim partially but reversed it following further scrutiny, guest appeal, and media pressure.
The case reveals how emerging AI technologies can be weaponised for deception, jeopardising trust, fairness, and the integrity of digital marketplaces and sharing economies.
It also highlights the challenge Airbnb faces in verifying damage claims when AI-manipulated photos can be convincing.
