Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg faced significant public backlash after using Meta AI to illustrate a children's book written by his daughter, an act seen by the creative community as a billionaire bypassing human artists in favour of a system trained on uncompensated and non-consensual creative works.
During Meta's annual Connect conference, Zuckerberg showcased The Mermaid Crystal, a book illustrated and with a trailer created using Meta's AI tools. In his Instagram post, he expressed pride in this personal project and said that a sequel is already planned.
However, critics, particularly from the artistic community, argued that AI undermines the livelihoods of real artists, who it deprives of income.
Prominent author Jason Pinter complained that Zuckerberg could have easily hired talented illustrators instead of relying on a computer programme. Many comments echoed Pinter's sentiment, urging Zuckerberg to support actual artists rather than opting for AI-powered solutions.
Despite the criticism, some users defended Zuckerberg's choice, suggesting that the personal nature of creating a book with his daughter justified the use of AI and that hiring artists would not necessarily enhance the personal touch he aimed for.
The incident highlights the ongoing debate over AI's role in creative fields and its impact on artistic professions.
