Three men died in Uttar Pradesh, India, after their car plunged off an unfinished bridge due to directions provided by Google Maps.
Three men - Nitin Kumar, Ajit Kumar, and Amit Kumar - were driving from Gurugram to Bareilly to attend a wedding when their car plunged into the Ramganga River after being directed onto a partially completed bridge.
Damaged by floods months earlier, the reconstruction of the bridge was still in progress, leaving a significant portion of it unbuilt.
The accident occurred at night under foggy conditions, which likely obscured the view of the bridge works.
Local officials indicated that the Google Maps navigation system had not been updated to reflect the bridge's hazardous status, leading the driver to mistakenly believe it was safe to proceed.
It also transpired that the bridge had no safety barriers or warning signs.
In response to the incident, local police registered cases against four engineers from Uttar Pradesh's Public Works Department and a Google Maps official for negligence.
The incident raises serious questions about the reliability of navigation apps like Google Maps in areas with incomplete infrastructure.
It also highlights the need for accurate updates on road conditions and proper safety measures at construction sites.
