Thai-British beauty queen Charlotte Austin was duped into transferring USD 118,000 (4 million baht) to scammers using AI technology to impersonate law enforcement officers.
Austin received a call from someone who said that they were a member of Thailand's Department of Special Investigation telling her they were investigating money-laundering and narcotics cases and ordered her to transfer money to their accounts for examination.
The scammers used AI technology to alter their faces when they communicated with Austin to reduce the likelihood of their identification.
31-year-old Ramil Pantawong and 28-year-old Thanawut Kanyaphanthe were later apprehended by Thai authorities. Both had been members of a gang operating from an 18-story building in Poipet, a city in northern Cambodia.
The two suspects told Thai police that they were recruited on social media to become administrators of a gambling website. However, when they arrived, the gang took their phones and passports away and forced them to work for the scam call centre instead.
Kanyaphanthe said they were threatened with physical violence if they refused to play the part, but were nevertheless compensated with money from successful scams.
He was later able to escape the gang after being diagnosed with a heart problem and returned to Bangkok where he was subsequently arrested.
The network was able to operate cross-border, complicating law enforcement efforts and allowing them to target at least 163 victims with similar tactics, according to Thai police.
The incident underscores the growing threat of AI-driven cybercrime in Southeast Asia, raising concerns about the ability of individuals to distinguish legitimate authority from sophisticated digital impersonations.
It also highlights the vulnerability of public figures to targeted scams and the urgent need for enhanced public awareness and law enforcement cooperation across borders to combat increasingly sophisticated fraud networks.
