Microsoft's 360 Productivity Score, designed to measure and improve organisational efficiency, prompted concerns about its potential to violate privacy and track employees constantly.
Critics argued the tool collects excessive amounts of personal data, including email content, meeting attendance, and usage patterns, raising questions about the extent to which employees' privacy is protected.ย
Others feared the Productivity Score could be used as a form of surveillance, monitoring employees' activities and potentially creating a stressful work environment, stifle creativity and autonomy, and lead to burnout, unhealthy work habits or unfair demotions or terminations.ย
Concerns were also raised that the score might inadvertently reinforce existing biases or inequalities within organisations.ย
Microsoft reponded by saying it would increase transparency about the data collected and how it is used, implement privacy controls to allow individuals to manage their data, and develop ethical guidelines to ensure that the tool is used responsibly and ethically.
