A Zoox driverless robotaxi collided with a passenger vehicle in Las Vegas, leading to a voluntary software recall of 270 vehicles and questions about the reliability of the company's driver assistance system.
An unoccupied Zoox robotaxi was involved in a minor collision with a passenger car that approached its lane.
Anticipating that the car would move forward, the robotaxi slowed and veered right, but the car stopped and yielded, remaining in the shoulder lane.
Despite hard braking, the robotaxi could not avoid contact.
No injuries were reported, and both vehicles sustained only minor damage
The incident was traced to a software flaw in the robotaxi’s automated driving system, which misjudged the actions of vehicles slowly approaching perpendicularly and stopping.
This led to an inaccurate prediction and hindered the robotaxi’s ability to avoid a crash in specific scenarios.
The incident, which resulted in a temporary suspension of Zoox driverless operations, a full safety review, and a voluntary fleet-wide software update to address the issue, highlights the ongoing challenges and scrutiny facing autonomous vehicle technology.
